identification

Breed name: Pharaoh

Country of Origin: Malta

Weight: 20-25 kg

Height (height at withers): male 56-63.5 cm; Female 53-61 cm

Age: 12-14 years old

Because the "Pharaoh" hunts hunting, relying on vision, it is often ranked among the grayhound group.

Representatives of this family are in the world's top 10 most expensive dogs.

In Malta, the breed was attracted mainly to hunting rabbits, thanks to which its representatives received a second name - hunting greyhounds for Maltese rabbits.

The breed takes a long time to mature in the external plan. If most puppies overcome adolescence by 7 months, then the "Pharaohs", to become full-fledged beauty, takes a year to a year and a half.

So far, Pharaoh has been transformed into a portrait pet and has not been tested for working qualities. Modern animal hunting activities have replaced sports, frisbee, and agility racing.

The tight grooming and aristocratic appearance of the "Pharaoh" is in no way the result of the diligent care of the owner. Short hair does not require expensive grooming and cosmetic procedures.

Pharaoh is a roasted athlete with a good personality and another charm of an amber look. This earned intellectual is easy to communicate with and gains confidence, possessing aristocratic habits and a brilliant mind while not compromising outright service. Usually, a Maltese greyhound is recommended to those who are in dire need of a four-legged friend who will gladly share the master's love for dog racing, but at the same time, he will not destroy the house because he suddenly became dull and wanted to hunt. In addition, the breed is very comfortable, so it is safe to get a pharaoh even if representatives of animals of different sizes and weight classes already live in the house.

Standard pharaonic dog breed

The physique of the "Pharaohs" is subtly similar to Budenko Ibiza (the same as the Seleucid ibis), which gave rise to several misconceptions about both breeds. Dogs from Malta are not close relatives of dogs from Ibiza, although both the first and second are usually ranked among the greyhound clan. As for appearance, in this regard, Pharaoh has all the trump cards. An elegantly toned silhouette with clearly drawn muscles, a neat elongated head, which gives the animal a resemblance to the Egyptian guard of the afterlife, and a fiery iridescent coat color - all this together creates a unique image of a semi-mythical creature that survived the heyday and decline of ancient empires.

Sexual dimorphism in the breed is very pronounced. So, for example, it is true, from the point of view of experts, the male "Pharaoh" of the Maltese should not be less than 53 cm and not more than 63.5 cm. Pharaoh moves in a fast career, and to gain maximum speed, she does not need acceleration. In addition, the breed is distinguished by great maneuverability, which for thousands of years has helped its representatives to successfully hunt small game.

head

The pharaoh's skull has a characteristic elongated shape with a moderately pronounced transition from the head to the muzzle.

jaws and teeth

The "Pharaohs" is distinguished by strong teeth and well-developed jaws, which in a closed case appear as a reference bite in the form of scissors.

nose

The skin on the nose lobe is painted in a fleshy pink color, in harmony with the hair of the greyhound.

the eyes

A real pharaoh dog should have deep oval eyes with a shiny amber-colored  iris.

azan

The large, moderately long ears of the animal are part of the breed"Recognize". In a cautious state, the ear cloth takes an upright position, giving the dog an even greater resemblance to the Egyptian god Anubis.

neck

The slightly curved and graceful necks of pharaoh dogs are of good length and muscularity.

corps

Pharaoh has an elongated and flexible body with a straight upper line, a barely noticeable slope of the stifle, a deep chest, and a harmoniously taut abdomen.

the parties

The legs are smooth and parallel to each other. The shoulders are long, strongly pulled back, and the elbows touch the body. The angles of the hock joints are moderate, with the hips well developed. The claws of the pharaoh are distinguished by a flattened shape, fingers tightly pressed to each other, and large, flexible pads. The animal moves smoothly, proudly raising its head, without raising its legs excessively in height and throwing its claws to the sides.

Tail

The tail of the breed has a whip-like shape and is not set too high, but at the same time not low. In motion, it rises and bends upward. Unwanted twists: tail twisted or tucked between the hind legs.

wool

The coat of Pharaoh's dogs has a thin but tough build. The hair itself is very short, shiny, and with sufficient density. The presence of any oches is excluded.

color

Pharaoh's dog can have a whole palette of colors from golden wheat to chestnut red with small white spots. White markings on the tip of the tail, toes, and chest (asterisk) are desirable. A miniature white hole on the muzzle is standard, unlike the white and white markings on the rest of the body.

exclusion of vices

Any defects in appearance and behavior of a strong degree of severity lead to the mandatory exclusion of the animal in competitions. In addition to standard vices such as cowardice, aggression, and anatomical abnormalities of development, pharaonic dogs could also have breed-specific "irregularities". In particular, individuals with a large white spot on the back of the neck are not allowed to participate in exhibitions. Another important point: When bringing to the show ring, be prepared for incompetent judging. Such incidents happen from time to time, usually due to the fact that there are very few true experts who fully understand the intricacies of the external appearance of the "Pharaohs".

pharaoh character

Despite the rather pretentious name of the breed, its representatives are completely devoid of arrogance and the desire to oppress everyone and everything. The right Pharaoh is an affectionate, intelligent, and understanding creature with whom it is easy to establish a relationship, even without having a cynical experience behind him. One of the main features of greyhounds and Maltese rabbits is their formidable calm. Hyperactive children with constant running around, narcissistic cats wandering around the apartment, crowds of guests - such twists of fate "Pharaoh" perceives incredibly calmly.

However, considering a pet a timid and insecure creature is clearly not worth it. If necessary, this elegant "model" will bark at a stranger, and tame crows on the street, protecting its own interests from childish encroachments. Sociability and curiosity are qualities that every representative of the breed must possess. At the same time, pharaonic dogs are completely alien to obsession. Making sure that the owner does not seek to make contact, the "Pharaoh" will not insult himself and beg for affection but will stop a little and go to work.

The innate aristocracy of behavior is what favorably characterizes Maltese greyhounds. A real pharaoh builds behavior based on the environment and does not allow himself to be superfluous. For example, by developing crazy speeds in dog racing and chasing a mechanical rabbit with primitive excitement, the "Pharaoh" will not turn upside down in the apartment in which he lives. Moreover, at home, this fit runner will prefer to play the part of the couch spoiler and nap calmly in the chair while the owner prepares another part of his goodies.

As for cohabitation with other dogs, as well as their relatives, here the "Maltese" are surprisingly loyal - the innate conflict-free nature affects. By the way, do not expect that Pharaoh will be betrayed by any one person. Representatives of this breed are distinguished by an equal attitude to all family members, and if a person is identified, they do it very precisely. Not a feature of graceful "Anubis" and such a bad habit as emptiness. Usually, owners complain about the breed's excessive passion for barking and howling of owners who do not like to walk in four-legged wings, as well as the presence of a habit of locking the animal in an empty apartment.

Education and Training

It is easy to make friends with a pharaoh, but to immediately inculcate the necessary standards of etiquette in a pet will not work, no matter how pleasant you are. On the other hand, greyhounds of rabbits have a tremendous memory, and once they learn technical commands or numbers, they are never forgotten.

It is important to understand that the proud "Anubis" does not tolerate strict discipline and study, so if you intend to engage in training, be prepared to spend from several months to several years on this. You will understand the same OKD breed many times longer than any German Shepherd, so sometimes it makes sense to abandon complex programs in favor of simpler options. After all, a pharaoh was not bred for service and protection.

To control the pets in the city or hunting, a set of initial commands such as “For me!” is enough! and "place!" and "Stop!" and others. If the animal belongs to the number of showmen who are regularly shown in the episode, then several specific commands should be added to this group that helps present the dog before the commission in a favorable light: “Action!”, "the teeth!" , "Run!".

The style of teaching all skills should be very pleasant - fear not, the "Pharaoh" will not interpret kindness as a weakness and will not include an alpha male. But it is better not to get carried away by repeating the exercises - the breed will not tolerate such boredom and the next time it will try to escape from the lesson. An important nuance: the "Pharaoh" must be weaned from an early age to give voice to trifles. Despite the fact that the Maltese are not hysterical, its barking is loud and annoying, so the less often the dog strains the vocal cords at home, the more convenient it will be for you.

Animals quickly learn to properly meet the needs of the toilet: pharaoh's dogs are naturally large Akrats, so in childhood, they easily relieve the need for newspapers and diapers, and when they grow up, they do the same, but outside the apartment, while walking.

Maintenance and care

Pharaoh tolerates space if she leads an active sporting life outside the home. Modern breeders claim that keeping an "Anubis" in an apartment is no more difficult than in a country mansion if you set the correct daily routine for the animal. Keep in mind the fact that the breed is sensitive to low temperatures (the natives of hot Malta after all), so on cold days take your dog for a walk in an insulated wetsuit or have him spend some time actively: running forward, playing with things, jumping. In general, do everything that helps to warm up.
Pay due attention to the choice of the collar. Due to the elongated neck, not all models are suitable for pharaoh dogs, but only the so-called “herring” - a design with a wide center and narrow edges. And please, no harness and chains, if you don't want to choke a pet rushing after a stray cat. But you can not look for a suitable sunbed at all - at home, greyhounds and rabbits still prefer to lie on chairs and sofas, stubbornly ignoring the mattresses purchased for them.

Hygiene

In terms of accuracy, Pharaoh's dogs have no equivalent. Representatives of this clan always find an opportunity to bypass a dirty pond and even in the windiest weather, they manage to walk back in neat form. Moreover, the Pharaoh is one of the rare photo breeds, the representatives of which do not need to be combed, trimmed, and cut. The maximum that is required to keep the coat in a healthy and neat shape is to walk through it once a week with rubber gloves.

Often to wash the "Pharaohs" does not make sense, but if the animal is dirty (which for the breed is somewhat nonsense), then you can not do without bathing. The main thing is to carefully monitor that the pet does not have the opportunity to lick the shampoo, which will negatively affect the digestion process. By the way, the "Maltese" themselves have a positive attitude to the water and willingly swim under the supervision of the owner. The eyes of the representatives of the breed do not require special care: it is enough to remove lumps of dust in the morning and carry out weekly preventive wipes of the eyelid mucosa with an ophthalmic solution.

Pharaoh's ears are large and open, so they are well ventilated and do not cause problems for their owners. Of course, it is necessary to examine the inside of the organ, but the care of the greyhound's ears is usually reduced to removing sulfur from them with a cotton swab or a wet bandage wound on tweezers. By the way, due to the very sharp curvature of the ear canal, it is undesirable for the "Pharaohs" to bury liquid preparations and vegetable preparations inside since the animal will not be able to get rid of the liquid on its own.

Alternatively, you can use drops along with a special veterinary powder. After the liquid enters the ear and dissolves the sulfur deposits, it is necessary to drain the inner part of the organ, pouring a small amount of powder. The powder will absorb excess moisture, and the greyhound will be able to independently remove it from the ear canal by shaking its head.

Once a month, the pharaoh advises to shorten the paw pad so that it does not interfere with running, and twice a week - to brush his teeth with veterinary paste and a soft-bristled brush or bandage wound on the finger. If you live in the city and in the cold season you walk with your pet on the sidewalks covered with reagents, then take care of the claws of the Maltese greyhound. In particular, upon returning home, rinse with warm water and lubricate with a nourishing cream.

walking and spinning

Ideally, the "Pharaoh" should spend about three hours a day outside the walls of the house. All this time, he has the right to unleash his instincts - how to run, jump and play. In the case of time pressure, the walking time can be reduced to two hours a day, but you will have to go out with a Saluki in the morning and evening on the street. The best alternative to hunting, which few people practice with Maltese "Anubis" would be flow. Running after the mechanical rabbit will be able to simultaneously exhaust the animal, revealing its innate talents as a provider.

To spark interest in chasing a mechanical bait, a puppy is teased at an early age with a toy tied with a rope. As for the complete preparation for competition competitions, it is recommended to start from the age of 7 months. By this stage, the pharaoh's puppy has become relatively stronger and has built the necessary muscle mass. The easiest way to teach proper running is with the help of a bicycle: the owner controls the bike, and a four-legged wing mounted on the frame runs side by side. The pace of the flight should alternate constantly from slow to fast. At the same time, it is important to stop in time - the dog should come from training a little tired, and not fall from exhaustion.

A good alternative to cycling is to catch up on snowy drifts, sand dunes, and beaches. For such training, it is best to take the animal outside of the settlements, and take advantage of a greyhound drive which is a pleasant pastime. Keep in mind that no beginner pets are allowed immediately on adult trails. First, an increasing number of athletes are engaged in short-distance spins, because at the dawn of their sports life, the pharaoh should not run more than 100-200 meters.

feeding

The breed is modest in eating habits. In addition, its representatives have a sensitive liver and pancreas, which automatically excludes the use of fatty foods. Accordingly, if you prefer to feed your pet "natural", bet on lean meat, rumen, and offal. By the way, the popular myth that the pharaoh respected plant food more than animal food is still a myth. Of course, the diet should include "vegetarian" products, but the basis of the menu for greyhounds, like any, is meat and its offal.

An important point: the size of the part of the pharaoh is a variable value. The largest panel should be of individuals participating in sporting and other events. Younger - in the elderly and lead a passive "Maltese" lifestyle.
So that the dog's nutrition does not fly to astronomical quantities, it is most appropriate to mix the meat into porridge, for example, in buckwheat or rice. In the summer, it is useful to feed the animal with fruit and vegetable salads in oil or low-fat sour cream. In winter, the lack of vitamins and fiber should be compensated by veterinary complexes, as well as dried algae (kelp, fucus). Low-fat cottage cheese, chicken eggs (no more than once a week), boiled fish fillet - products necessary for the complete nutrition of greyhounds.

Many foreign and local breeders of pharaonic dogs made a choice in favor of industrial feed. At the same time, it is important to understand those special savings when switching from “natural” to high-quality “drying” will not work. In order for the animal to feel more natural and more satisfied with energy, you will have to spend money on superior, all-around varieties that are high in animal proteins. It is desirable that the composition of the “drying” included meat and not the by-products of its processing. For example, some manufacturers recycle the skin, feathers, and connective tissues that help increase the amount of protein in dry food. However, such a protein will not be assimilated by the body of the "Pharaohs", and therefore will not bring benefits.

Pharaoh's health and diseases

Pharaonic dogs can be considered long-liver: 15-17 years for a breed is a perfectly achievable age bar. Moreover, even the elderly and many who have seen many individuals are in no hurry to enter into circulation, maintain an elegant appearance, participate in various exhibitions and receive diplomas.
Of the hereditary diseases in pharaonic dogs, hip dysplasia and patellar luxation are usually felt themselves. Pets often suffer from bloating. In this regard, it is important not to overfeed the dog, and to provide a very calm environment in the room where he eats, because the Greyhound is in a hurry and worry, swallowing air with food, which provokes bloating.

But the breed is completely hypoallergenic and can freely absorb all products allowed for dogs. The only thing that slightly spoils the life of the "Maltese" is the increased sensitivity to chemicals, therefore, treat the four-legged "Anubis" with flea and tick repellents, applying the drug to the hard-to-reach places of the dog's tongue.

How to choose a puppy

Ask the seller how often he knits. In real pros interested in developing the breed, pharaoh dogs bring offspring no more than once a year.
An indicator of the normality of a small "Pharaoh" is the folds on the body. If there are none, and the baby's ribs are clearly visible, most likely, the animals are undernourished.

In serious nurseries, all manufacturers are tested for dysplasia. If, when identifying a litter, the results of veterinary examinations are not presented, it is better not to risk and choose another breeder.
Pharaohs less than 2.5 months old have a bluish iris color. With age, the eyes will change color to standard amber.

If you buy a puppy under the age of three months, be prepared for floppy ears. In pharaonic dogs, the ear cloth takes an upright position only in the fourth month of life, and sometimes the process needs to be accelerated by gluing the cartilage with plaster.

Slight thickening in the joint area in children of the "Pharaoh" is a normal phenomenon that will disappear with age. But lameness, an uncertain gait, and slightly twisted limbs are reasons to reject the deal.

A mentally healthy Maltese Rabbit greyhound puppy should respond adequately to touch. If taking the animal in your arms, you feel how it is trying to escape and escape, then this is a bad sign.
