Walking the puppy on a leash for the first time

What unites a person most with his dog and vice versa is daily walking, a tool that goes beyond strengthening the bond between pet and owner and is necessary for our dog to enjoy a complete state of well-being.

Walking is part of socialization, learning about the environment, and most importantly, of a routine, and it is a completely necessary routine for a dog. Dogs should always walk, however, this need is greater in puppies and young dogs, because they need to direct their energy, otherwise stress and anxiety can arise very quickly.

What you need to know before walking your puppy

Puppies, once they are separated from the mother (generally after a month and a half of age), need special care at home, as they are in the process of maturation of their organs and systems.

Especially important is the maturation of the immune system, which will allow your body to cope with many infectious diseases. This stage of development and maturation plays a crucial role in a dog's health, which is why we should not rush to walk outside.

Before walking the puppy for the first time, it will be necessary:

The first deworming was done

That the puppy receives the first mandatory vaccinations: parvovirus, hepatitis, tuberculosis, leptospirosis, rabies, and parainfluenza

Deworming and initial vaccination are usually finished at around 3-4 months of age, at which time they can start walking outside, and do so before they endanger our pet's life.

First contact with the collar and leash

It is normal for a puppy to be afraid at the first walk, but we can reduce and shape this reaction if we have shown the dog previously and in the home environment the basic accessories needed for daily walks: a collar or and a leash.

It is easiest to start by introducing the collar or harness, so it is very important before putting on the collar, for example, that the dog let it smell as much as it considers necessary. You should keep in mind that dogs know their surroundings mainly by smell. After this initial contact you can wear the collar occasionally, gradually increasing the time until the puppy is completely comfortable with the collar and getting used to wearing it.

However, we would like to remember that the harness is often recommended to avoid the appearance of problems such as glaucoma, damage to the windpipe, or other health problems that may arise if the puppy pulls too hard when learning to walk.

The procedure for introducing the leash should be similar, before putting it on the collar we must let the dog smell it and explore it, later we can put it on and let the dog get used to the sensation of wearing it.

Once the first contact with the collar and leash begins, we can simulate a small walk indoors, in this way, the first outing outside the house will have more chances of success and, most importantly, fun. a pet.

Do you have what you need to get started on the first trip?

Before you get ready to take your puppy for a walk for the first time, make sure you have everything you need:

Lots of love to calm the puppy down before leaving It is essential that your dog is calm before he starts his first walk, and don't start until he doesn't appear calm.

A fixed leash for better handling of the puppy on his first rides, as this is more difficult with an extendable leash.

Plastic bags for collecting waste.

Dog treats that will serve as rewards for their good behavior.

How to walk a puppy for the first time

The puppy's first walk will be of great importance to avoiding bad habits in the future, being the behavior to avoid par excellence that the dog pulls on the leash and wants to set speed as well as direction. Once your dog is calm, you can put a leash on him and then open the door to leave.

When your dog abandons you or is calm, offer him a treat, this will reinforce his good behavior and then your pet will always let you out before or do so in an appropriate manner, rather than desperately gravitating towards a door. However, remember that he is a puppy on his first walk, we should not ask him for high-profile behaviour.

It is normal for a puppy to get nervous on his first walk and not obey, in which case you should stop in front of him until he stops and calms down, and as soon as he does, give him the treat again in this way. Through positive reinforcement, he will learn to walk calmly and in harmony with you.

The other extreme of nervousness and disobedience is fear, a fear that may be normal but is crippling and needs all the understanding and patience on our part. If the puppy does not want to walk, do not force him to do so under any circumstances. What you should do in this case is to encourage him to walk with cuddles and words in a soft and sweet tone.

You should repeat these habits on every walk until your dog has fully integrated this important part of his daily routine.
To associate the outside with where he needs to pee, give him a treat the first few times every time he pees or defecates during a walk.

How long should a puppy's first walk last?

Puppies have a lot of energy, but they also run out very quickly, which is why sleep and food are the mainstays in this first stage of life. If you want your puppy to perceive walking as something fun and positive, you must adapt the intensity and duration of the walk to his needs.

The puppy's first walks should not last more than 10 minutes, in the same way, you cannot force the dog to walk for a duration or intensity greater than its limits.

The process of socialization on the walks

When your puppy is used to walking and you notice that he is no longer afraid or stressed, we will begin the process of puppy socialization, which is necessary to avoid fears, aggression, and other negative situations that may arise in the future.

Socialization consists in presenting our dog with everything that he has in mind in his adult life: dogs, cats, people, things, noises, environments The purpose is to get used to all these stimuli so that he perceives them positively and does not react to them negatively.

If your puppy has been properly vaccinated, you should not be afraid to introduce him to other dogs, let him smell urine, or roll around in the Baby Can sand. It is essential that the puppy experiences and knows everything around him. Of course, all these experiences must be positive to avoid future worries.
