Chicken with rice for dogs

Is chicken and rice good for a dog?

Homemade chicken with rice is a light diet often recommended by veterinarians to help dogs recover from diarrhea and/or vomiting. Since it is easy to digest, low in fat, and a source of protein and simple carbohydrates, this diet is often recommended for digestive issues. The combination of proteins and starches can also stimulate the appetite when your dog is ill or needs to recover from surgery. Although they should not be given for a long period, cooked chicken and white rice contain enough nutrients to help your dog recover from illness.

Buy high-quality chicken that you can tolerate so that your dog absorbs as few toxins as possible. The easiest way to do this is with boneless chicken breasts, as you won't have to remove the fat or bones from the chicken. Look for meat from chicken that has been kept as hormone-free as possible.

How Much Chicken and Rice Should I Give My Dog?

Buy a box of short or long-grain white rice. Avoid pressure cooking rice with this dog food recipe, as it has less nutritional value than its longer-boiled counterpart.

Brown rice is also suitable, but it should be cooked longer until it is fully cooked and soft enough not to unnecessarily irritate a dog's stomach and intestines.

In some publications, brown rice is discouraged because it contains a lot of fiber, but this is a misconception. Fiber helps promote digestion and regulate its function. Animal nutritionists believe that fiber increases the rate of intestinal transit in dogs with a slow passage time and slows it down in dogs with a fast passage time (in other words, it makes dogs with constipation stools and dogs with diarrhea, stools become firmer again)

It is not necessary to buy rice with an organic or non-GMO seal, as there is still no evidence that these types of rice have a different nutritional value or arsenic level.

Prepare the chicken for cooking. Chicken meat can be cooked with bones, however, you need to rid the meat from the bones after cooking. However, the meat is cooked faster and more thoroughly if you first cut it into small pieces or buy boneless chicken meat.

Remove any bones from the meat (or buy them without) and cut off the fat.
Cut the chicken meat into 1-inch cubes for small dogs and into 1-inch cubes for medium or large dogs. Dogs that lack many teeth sometimes need smaller cuts of meat.

Place the chicken in a large soup bowl. Put in as much water as the chicken is covered. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer. Cook the chicken until the meat is completely white on the inside.

The cooking time can range from 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the cut of meat. Chicken meat with bones will take longer.

If the meat is not fully cooked, it may cause more diarrhea and vomiting in your dog due to the bacteria that can be found in raw and semi-cooked chicken meat.

Remove the chicken from the water and let it cool completely. Save the broth for later. You can help the meat cool faster by spreading it out on a baking sheet or putting it through a sieve and rinsing it with cold water.

Remove all bones from the cooled chicken. Set the meat aside and discard the bones. Then cut the chicken into pieces that are 1.3 cm long or smaller for small dog breeds, and into pieces 2.5 cm or smaller for medium and large dog breeds.

Make sure your dog does not have access to the chicken bones, neither in the cuts of meat nor in the trash. Chicken bones can split open and get stuck in or pierce your dog's throat, stomach, or intestines. This can lead to death.

Scoop the fat from the surface of the cooled chicken broth and pour the remaining liquid into a bowl. If you cut the fat out of the chicken before cooking, there may be little or no fat at all. Measure two and a half cups (about 600 ml) of broth and pour it back into a bowl.

Let the chicken broth cook. While you wait for that, you can start preparing the rice that you will be cooking in the broth.

Take a cup full of rice (about 230g depending on the type of rice) and rinse it well. To rinse, put the rice in a saucepan or insert a rice cooker or pot. Take plenty of water and stir the water-covered rice with your fingers. Wash it several times until the water is clear. This helps remove excess starch and arsenic from the rice.

Rice is cooked in chicken broth. Add a cup of rice as soon as the chicken broth boils. Let it boil again, then reduce the heat and let it simmer. Cover the pot with a tightly closed lid and let the rice simmer for 20 minutes (brown rice may take 40-45 minutes). It will be a little mushy and soft when cooked, and it will absorb all the water.

Let the cooked rice cool completely. You can speed up the process by spreading the rice on a baking tray and adding air to it with a piece of cardboard.

How to feed your dog rice and chicken

Add the chicken and rice mixture to your dog's food bowl. You must follow veterinary feeding instructions. Usually, this means that you always give a dog that is vomiting quite a bit at the moment. If your dog keeps food with him, you can slowly increase the feeding the next few times until he can eat the full amount of food again at his usual feeding times.

Slowly switch from chicken and rice to regular dog food. After successfully feeding him chicken and rice for a few days, you can slowly begin to transition from the chicken and rice mixture to regular dog food. Replace chicken and rice with a little dry food each day until you gradually return to your normal diet over four to five days. Be sure to consult your vet regarding switching to regular food. It depends on the condition of the dog whether you should feed the chicken and rice diet for more than a few days.

Call your vet if your dog's symptoms do not improve. The chicken and rice diet is intended as a temporary home remedy. However, if your dog's diarrhea has not subsided within the period given by your vet or remains very tender for more than three days, you should contact your vet immediately. He/she will tell you if you should take your pet to practice for a re-examination and extra medication can be sent home, but he can also advise you over the phone on what you can try in addition. B like giving canned pumpkins or other simple things.

Tips

Consult your vet before trying a dog food recipe. He or she can tell you if your dog's condition can improve with a light diet like this, or, if necessary, suggest other medical treatments.

Dogs can't handle spices and neither can we humans. Therefore, do not add salt, pepper, or other seasonings to homemade dog food.

Warnings

This light diet is not suitable as the sole source of nutrients over a longer period. Some important vitamins and minerals will be deficient in your dog if he only gets chicken and rices his whole life. Ask your vet for recipes for good homemade dog food if you want to prepare food for your dog himself.

Do not use oil and remove all fat from the meat you are cooking. The pancreas has to work hard to digest these compounds, which in turn can lead to inflammation of this organ.

Call your vet right away if your dog continues to vomit. Dogs (especially small ones) can become dehydrated very quickly by vomiting, so it is very important to provide them with enough fluids so that they can recover. The more fluid a dog loses, the worse his symptoms get, and other organs, such as his kidneys, gradually become damaged.
